Did he deliver? Yes. 7 points consisting of an assist, 1 bonus point and a clean sheet. Is he a "must-have" for your team yet? Well, he's expensive (£8.4m) but a tantalising differential (5.1% owned) and Swansea have a very interesting set of fixtures to end the season with - HUL (A) / CHE (H) / NEW (A) / AVL (H) / SOU (H) / SUN (A). Chelsea aside, there is potential for plenty of points between now and the end of the season for the Spanish maestro.
Anyway, enough reflecting in the glory of past picks. That was then and this is now. My FlyBuy pick for this week comes from a team who are stuttering, with rumours of dressing room unrest who are being managed by a guy who certainly wears his heart on his sleeve, but can't back it up with any coaching credentials.
I refer of course to Tim Sherwood and Tottenham Hotspur. Still in 6th position in the league (and above Manchester United), this doesn't tell the full story of the last few weeks. However, looking at the remaining fixtures for Spurs, it is my opinion that every single one is winnable. Except for two things. A spate of injuries to an already weak front-line, (coupled with the sale of Jermaine Defoe - WHY!?!) plus a tendency for Sherwood to leave out Spurs most creative and dynamic player. The guy with the ability to make things happen, and a whizz when it comes to the deadball delivery.
Step forward Christian Eriksen. He has had an odd first season in the Premier League; in FPL terms he started the campaign priced at a reasonable £8.0m, but lack of game time in the League has seen his value plummet. You can now pick him up for a bargain £6.5m. With 5 goals and 5 assists to his name, he has just played 90 minutes for 2 games in a row for the first time since December.
With no European distraction now, Spurs need to look to make up the 4 point gap between themselves and 5th placed Everton, while being very mindful that 7th placed Manchester United are only 2 points behind them.
Sherwood definitely won't be in the hot seat come the start of next season, but incoming manager Louis Van Gaal will definitely want to inherit a club competing in Europe. Chairman Daniel Levy will be telling Sherwood in no uncertain terms that this is his only remaining aim this season. And to do that, he will need to play his best player - every game, for 90 minutes.
Spurs fixtures are as follows: SUN (H) / WBA (A) / FUL (H) / STO (A) / WHU (A) / AVL (H)
Currently owned by just 3.7% of all FPL managers, investing now in Christian Eriksen could be a very shrewd move indeed. He is almost definitely going into my own team as a direct replacement for Adam Johnson after DGW34, but you could get onboard early...
