Three Budget Forward Options in FPL (2016/2017)

With the addition of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the Premier League this season, FPL managers have to ponder and decide properly who they want as their front three. If you go with the Aguero and Zlatan option, then your 3rd forward should be a budget option. If you decide to go with Aguero/Zlatan and someone like Kane or Vardy, you 3rd forward should be budgeted as well.
Either way, as with goalkeepers, there is growing importance of having 1 decent budget forward in your team so that you can have a stronger midfield or defence. Therefore, today I will highlight 3 budgeted strikers that you should consider as your 3rd forward.
With over 200 appearances in the Premier League, Shane Long is a no-nonsense, hardworking striker that is capable of scoring goals. In the 15/16 season, Long had 28 appearances for Southampton, scoring 10 goals. Do note that he had to fight for a starting position with his ex-teammate, Graziano Pellè, last season. Pellè, on the other hand, had 30 appearances and scored 11. Long did pretty well considering the fact that he scored 1 less than his teammate while playing 2 games less.
At 15.3% ownership, and being the 5th most owned forward behind the likes of Aguero, Zlatan, Lukaku and Kane, you do not want to be missing out on Shane Long who is priced at £6.5m. Southampton finished the season in 6th, topping West Ham and Liverpool. This season, they will look to replicate the same success and with Long having a solidified spot as Southampton’s number 1 striker, I believe he will have his chance to shine and score goals.
Not far behind Long, at 10.8% ownership, Andre Gray will look to perform as well as he did last season in the Championship with Burnley. He had 43 appearances and was the league’s top scorer with 25 goals. Gray will look to emulate his performance on a bigger stage this season in the Premier League. Although Burnley’s fixture is relatively tough at the start of the season, if Gray establishes himself well in the league and poses a threat to his opponent’s defence, he may cause a lot of trouble and score you points. At £6.5m and as your 3rd forward, he may bring you good returns.
If you are looking for a differential, look no further than to Callum Wilson. The English forward had a great start to last season, scoring 5 goals in 6 matches. His spectacular start to the Premier League did not last as Wilson suffered a ruptured ACL in his right knee in the following match against Stoke. He was out for 6 months and we were not able to see his full potential in the Premier League.
Now let’s go back to the 14/15 season in the Championship, where Wilson was Bournemouth leading goal scorer and his 20 goals were the main reason why they were able to be promoted to the Premier League. Therefore, there is potential for Wilson to do well this season as he has shown that he has the capability to score goals for his club. With a 5.0% ownership at £6.5m, Wilson may prove to be the differential you need to go up the ranks in this season’s FPL.
These 3 forwards all have the potential to do well therefore select the one that fits your team. They are also able to free up some vital cash so that you could upgrade to a more expensive midfielder. Having a balanced team is always important in FPL and one of these 3 players allow you the flexibility to do so.
