#CalledIt Differential Pick - GW33

As you might remember (if you have read my article last week), I spent a good part of the double gameweek 31 in London (click here to read more about it) and while I was there I also got a chance to visit The White Hart Lane to enjoy my first ever Premier League match with the home side going against the visiting Southampton.

Enjoying the pre-game ceremony we joked with @FantasyYIRMA about (finally) offloading the "Great-Danish-hype-proven-bust" Christian Eriksen and how he is sure to make us regret it now. Well, our smiles turned to disbelief when he went on to score two goals, assist one and collecting all three bonus points in his all-star 18 FPL points performance. It was clear to me then and there that I will once again (I know, some people never learn) be getting him in my team.

He is down to 6.5m and owned by only 4% of managers at the moment of writing. He has great fixtures coming (SUN, wba, FUL), is on form and has been the cornerstone of Tottenham's attack lately. Admittedly, you never know what Tim Sherwood ultimately decides to do - benching his best player to try something new, leaving him out of the squad because he prefers Danish biscuits to English shortbread cookies with his 5 o'clock tea or will simply play him as a center-back. I have no clue and I will just pray to god that this is the "Sane Tim Week". Because, if he plays alongside the big man Adebayor, he is sure to do some damage, if nothing else at least an assist or two. #CalledIt pick for GW33, Christian Eriksen.

GW33 FPL #JackInTheBox - Aruba Style

I promise to be as short and sweet as I can, but we all know that that's an exercise in futility. So here's the lowdown....

Last Tuesday night, amidst the craziness of dotting my i's and crossing my t's at work, helping get the house clean, preparing my in-laws for 5 fun days with our kids, and packing, I threw together a quick GW32 #JITB article featuring Mr. Miguel Michu then, after a restful sleep, got on a plane to paradise.

As the friendly woman at the open-air front desk of the resort checked us in, a bartender appeared out of nowhere teasing us with "virgin" mojitos on a tray as a welcome treat. Without much prodding, he soon revealed the bottle of rum in the hand he had kept behind his back, and he proceeded to "top off" our drinks before having us open our mouths and tilt our heads back as he poured the rum straight into our mouths. So Welcome to Aruba - Manchebo style!

Unable to move fast enough and grinning from ear to ear, we quickly went up to our room, paused long enough to take the picture above from our second floor balcony, changed into our beachwear and high-tailed it back downstairs to take in the resort and start exploring. Sometime between then and the time we left, in a land far, far away, a guy named Michu was taking to the pitch. It could have been while we laid in a mild stupor on the most beautiful beach I've ever been to, sometimes in the shade of our thatched roof hut, or sometimes in the 88 degree Caribbean sun. It could have been while we sat back and read or while we closed our eyes and took one of a number of breeze-induced catnaps.

Maybe it was while we enjoyed a couples massage inside the top notch spa with sweeping views out to the ocean. Perhaps it was while we were being pampered up one side and down the other by a staff whose greatest enjoyment seemed to be making our own enjoyment as complete and effortless as possible. I don't know, it could have been while we sat at the beach bar during one of our all-inclusive days, making our way down the tropical drink list one by one seeing how long it would take before we got to one we didn't like. It surely wasn't late in the afternoon as the steel drums played, the myriad of birds chirped, the breeze made the overhead palm leaves sway in unison, and the giant Sun orb in the sky settled down into the ocean horizon.

Hah, I actually do know when it was now that I look back on it. It was around the time we walked through the beach bar on our way across the street to have lunch. I glanced at the bar tv, showing Crystal Palace with a 1-0 lead over my Chelsea Blues, felt a ping of astonishment, then (don't tell anyone) forgot about it as quickly as it took for my brain to figure out what it saw in the first place. So, sometime around then, while sipping on a Heineken, unbeknownst to me, Michu was out there making me proud with a 7-point haul. I didn't learn until I had arrived in Aruba that the FPLHints team ran the board with Michu picks. We were all happy; and that's nice ;)

Which brings us to this week. It's a veritable JackInTheBox-Fest, with 6 of the bottom 8 clubs and 8 of the bottom 9 clubs squaring off in a winner takes all gang-war. Well, not really, but you know what I mean. There hasn't been much shakeup in the bottom 8 recently, but that could change soon enough. It's gonna be interesting.

FPL ARUBA-STYLE GW33 #JackInTheBox:  Robert Snodgrass

Take a guess when the last time a team playing against West Brom scored zero goals. Go ahead; unless you're a Baggie you probably won't remember. Mid-March...nah.  Late February...try again. Okay fine...mid-January. WRONG. It was New Year's Day. They played Newcastle at home that day.  They won't be so lucky this time around as they will face Norwich away. And while Norwich have not been the most productive side at home recently, West Brom have conceded on average 2.5 goals during their last four trips away, including 2 to Hull, 3 to Crystal Palace, and 4 to Aston Villa. I'll take these odds and toss the armband to Mr. Snodgrass this week, thinking he should be heavily involved in the Canary attack.

And, if he doesn't come through, well, I always have my Aruba memories and pictures to fall back on to calm me down. Oooooh......so relaxing. Gimme a beer, Phoebus.

(I think the above picture may be the single best picture I've ever taken ;))

The GW33 Team:

1 FREE TRANSFER WAS AVAILABLE FOR GW33.

NO TRANSFERS MADE

The instant feeling after scoring a sub-par 44 in GW32:

I dropped 7,000 places but still in the Top 1%

The Surprising GW 33 Temptations:

JORDAN MUTCH - You can't ignore a £4.8M player that has scored 3 goals and bagged 3 assists in his last 4 PL games.  I almost bought him but I opted against it as I couldn't bench Gerrard.

FABIAN DELPH - Many have overlooked him.  But at £4.4M he is well priced, especially considering the 1 goal & 2 assists in his last 4 PL games.  He is sure to do well as Villa face Fulham at home.

The GW 33 Lack of Transfer(s) & Reasoning:

In all honesty I could do with a reshuffle following a below bar GW32.  But knee jerk reactions (panic transfers) don't always work in FPL.  Fortunately, my player's have reasonable fixtures in GW33.  Thus the spare transfer can be used if needed to boost coverage in DGW34.

The Captain:

I was going to captain Suarez again, but I wanted to be a bit different.  In addition, West Ham at the Boleyn Ground (especially with some form) will be a tricky fixture for any PL team.  As a result, it made sense for me to captain in-form Silva as City score a fair bit at home.

The Personal Competitive Context:

I won my R2 tie of the Dugout Champions League and thus made it through to the Quarter Finals!  After knocking out favourites Aaron and Marco, I face another Dugout regular (Bryan).  I have Coleman, Y. Toure, Silva, Lukaku & Sturridge but he has Rooney, Mata, Mutch, Johnson & Bony.  It's not going to be easy.

#FlyBuy - GW33

Let's not dwell on past failures, only current glories! The FPL Hints team all independently settled on the same player for our various picks for GW32. FlyBuy, Jack In The Box, Called It and SpacePick all went for returning Swansea star, Miguel Michu. Coincidence? Yes. Not one of us liaised or discussed with each other who our picks would be.

Did he deliver? Yes. 7 points consisting of an assist, 1 bonus point and a clean sheet. Is he a "must-have" for your team yet? Well, he's expensive (£8.4m) but a tantalising differential (5.1% owned) and Swansea have a very interesting set of fixtures to end the season with - HUL (A) / CHE (H) / NEW (A) / AVL (H) / SOU (H) / SUN (A). Chelsea aside, there is potential for plenty of points between now and the end of the season for the Spanish maestro.

Anyway, enough reflecting in the glory of past picks. That was then and this is now. My FlyBuy pick for this week comes from a team who are stuttering, with rumours of dressing room unrest who are being managed by a guy who certainly wears his heart on his sleeve, but can't back it up with any coaching credentials.

I refer of course to Tim Sherwood and Tottenham Hotspur. Still in 6th position in the league (and above Manchester United), this doesn't tell the full story of the last few weeks. However, looking at the remaining fixtures for Spurs, it is my opinion that every single one is winnable. Except for two things. A spate of injuries to an already weak front-line, (coupled with the sale of Jermaine Defoe - WHY!?!) plus a tendency for Sherwood to leave out Spurs most creative and dynamic player. The guy with the ability to make things happen, and a whizz when it comes to the deadball delivery.

Step forward Christian Eriksen. He has had an odd first season in the Premier League; in FPL terms he started the campaign priced at a reasonable £8.0m, but lack of game time in the League has seen his value plummet. You can now pick him up for a bargain £6.5m. With 5 goals and 5 assists to his name, he has just played 90 minutes for 2 games in a row for the first time since December.

With no European distraction now, Spurs need to look to make up the 4 point gap between themselves and 5th placed Everton, while being very mindful that 7th placed Manchester United are only 2 points behind them.

Sherwood definitely won't be in the hot seat come the start of next season, but incoming manager Louis Van Gaal will definitely want to inherit a club competing in Europe. Chairman Daniel Levy will be telling Sherwood in no uncertain terms that this is his only remaining aim this season. And to do that, he will need to play his best player - every game, for 90 minutes.

Spurs fixtures are as follows: SUN (H) / WBA (A) / FUL (H) / STO (A) / WHU (A) / AVL (H)

Currently owned by just 3.7% of all FPL managers, investing now in Christian Eriksen could be a very shrewd move indeed. He is almost definitely going into my own team as a direct replacement for Adam Johnson after DGW34, but you could get onboard early...

Bantasy Football: Scouting Sunderland (Desperately)

Having pinned my colours firmly to the whoever-has-the-most-fixtures-left mast last GW, I've backed myself into a corner a bit and am somewhat forced to go for Sunderland this week.

They have two games in hand over most but despite two double GWs on the calendar, it's hard to see where the value lies. Fret not - that's what I'm here for - well... that and to show you silly pictures.

Sunderland-sceptic

As deep as my love is for Gustavo Poyet's style, Sunderland are utterly village. A team that consistently fails to start Adam Johnson - clearly their best attacking option - is arguably beyond fantasy reproach and Hazard proved a couple of weeks ago (to me at least) that a quality player can do a lot more damage in one game than an iffy one can do in two (I'm looking at you Sterling!)

He knows I'm looking at him but can't help continuing to rubbish (erroneous phrasing used for comedic effect)

Maffs

Thing is, whichever way you look at it, 2+2=4. Adam Johnson's fantasy production has fizzled out recently with him finding that great bench-warming form he specialised in at Man City but his overall points tally for the season (114) is still higher than top mid Eden Hazard if you double it - and he's about half the price! Now consider the fact that two double GWs = 4 matches and even Ki Sung-Yueng's meagre 80 pts begins to look like the dog's.

The Black Cats face a downtrodden Tottenham at the Lane this week (Spurs will play badly, their fans will boo, the away team will snatch a win/score draw) and their two double GWs are Everton/Man City (GW 34) and United/West Brom (GW 37).  This is neither spectacular nor as ominous as it seems - all these sides concede goals and Sunderland are (CLICHE ALERT) fighting for their little lives.

Adam Johnson (6.5m)

Might as well start with the only one anyone's heard of. AJ's had some scintillating performances this campaign. His overall score is heavily propped up by a hat-trick against Fulham (does that really count?) but he proceeded to score in three consecutive games after that. Ne shabby pas for a midfielder. Also he scored in Monday's loss to Wham despite only playing 38 minutes.

Sung-Yeung Ki (4.3m)

4.3 million fantasy dolla dolla bills y'all for a mid who plays pretty much every game is about as cheap as fish and chips wrapping paper - without the chips. On 3 goals and 2 assists he's hardly a world-beater but is a decent player with quick feet and the ability to unlock a defence. Bang for buck.

Fabio Borini (6.2m)

The Liverpool loanee has established himself as first choice frontman... ish. His stats (3 goals and 2 assists) aren't even really worth a first look, let alone a second, but his ownership (0.5%) provides a delectable differential.

Some sources (FIFA 14) would indicate that the longer Borini plays, the longer he will continue to remain useless. Getting him to score a goal against a top 7 team is like getting Nigel Farage to answer a question with no made-up statistics in it - ain't gonna happen, sonny. Since 5 of Sunderland's remaining 8 are against these elite sides, you might be wary about taking a punt on him.

Vito Mannone (4.5m)

8 clean sheets isn't horrendous for a relegation-threatened team and you'd like to think Poyet's main mission will be to plug holes at the back if he's to stay a Premiership manager. While Sunderland's fixtures might appear daunting at first, Mannone rotates beautifully with Brad Guzan (Aston Vanilla, 5.1m) and Joe Hart (Man City, 6.0m). Swapping between them your match-ups could be:

GW        Fixture

33 -- Fulham (H) /  Southampton (H)
34 -- Everton (H) + Man City (A) / Sunderland (H)
35 -- Southampton (H)
36 -- Cardiff (H) / West Brom (H)
37 -- Man U (A) + West Brom (H) / Everton (A) + Aston Villa (H)
38 -- Swansea (H) / West Ham (H)

Key - Mannone in Red. Hart Blue. Guzan Pink.

Marcos Alonso (4.5m)

Who? Marcos Alonso. He plays for Sunderland. He's a full back. Also on loan. Can play in midfield.

Why? Has only missed one game (red card suspension) since coming in in January. Clearly rated by Poyet. Made one appearance for Real Madrid so is officially better than all other Sunderland defenders ever.

Really? Sure, why not? You could get Wes Brown 0.2m cheaper but he's a centre-back and you know who he is so where's the fun in that?

Altidore (6.2m)

This man is all the rage across the pond. He hasn't had three 90 minute games in a row all season, though - and has one goal this season. Fogetabaaaaatit.

Advanced apologies

We all make mistakes. Suggesting the procurement of Sunderland players in fantasy football could certainly prove to be one of mine. But be open minded, allow yourself to take risks and, most importantly, don't blame me if it all goes tits-up.

How Do You Solve A Problem Like...Transfer Panic!

Regular Twitter followers of mine will know that over the last couple of weeks (DGW31 and GW32) I have suffered a catastrophic collapse of my FPL season.

Riding high on the crest of a wave, I went into DGW31 quietly confident of improving my pre-GW overall rank of 1959th. In all honesty, I thought by now I would be inside the Top 500, with an opportunity to hunt down those above me as we enter the final stages of the season.

Why was I confident? Well, I had a Masterplan. I had studied the form, the upcoming fixtures and had put into action early my transfer strategy that would enable me to field 10 DGW players. The plan was public knowledge. It is on this Blog and I had tweeted about it regularly.
Here it is again as a quick reminder:

Straight forward enough. But then Murphy's Law came into play. First of all Vincent Kompany got himself sent off after 9 minutes away at Hull City. Secondly, Chris Smalling picked up a hamstring injury. Double Whammy.

That was two of my DGW players out of the game. Kompany for the Fulham match, and Smalling for both. That left me with only 8 DGW players. No problem.

This is when I should have accepted my fate and NOT PANICKED! I'm a cool customer. I've been playing FPL since 2006. I know that DGW's don't ALWAYS pay off big. Fielding 8 players is still acceptable. Plus I still had my FT for GW30. So what did I do?

I panicked.

I took a -8 Points hit to transfer Smalling, Lallana and J-Rod OUT, and bring Dummett, Gerrard and Carroll IN.

Even just reading that sentence back has made me go cold. A points hit to take two in-form high scoring FPL assets out in the form of Lallana and J-Rod. What was I thinking? I was thinking they didn't have a DGW. Crazy. I also thought that now was the time to take a gamble. Andy Carroll, returning to action with only a few months to book his ticket to Brazil. West Ham with two home games in DGW31. One against Man Utd, where surely England boss Roy Hodgson would be in attendance. A chance for Carroll to shine. Or so I thought...

And so it transpired that sat in the Euston Flyer in North London on the afternoon of Saturday 22 March 2014 my season started to unravel. To make matters worse, it was done under the judging eye of The Chief (@FPLHints), Matej (@CalledItFPL) and Ryan (@FantasyYirma). I would have struggled to have found better FPL Royalty to have my weaknesses exposed to!

By that evening, I had accumulated 87 points (79 with the points hit). Stories were rolling in of 150+ scores (The Chief himself had amassed 170 odd!). My overall rank plummeted from 1959th to 9792nd in the space of several hours.

Not to worry, there was a second half to DGW31 as we all knew. It didn't get much better; 37 points. Giving me a grand total of 124 points (116 with the -8 hit) from a DGW that had promised so much. My rank "improved" to leave me with a final post-DGW31 standing of 6722nd (4763 places lost).

But I still had a plan, right? Wrong. If you cast your eye up above, the plan had called for Curtis Davies and Romelu Lukaku to be brought in. Had I done that? No. I had Paul Dummett and Andy Carroll in my squad instead.

How had this affected me though? I've worked it out. Davies (12 points) and Lukaku (18 points)would have cost me -4 to get in, but returned 26 points after that deduction. I would also have kept Lallana (but would have benched him anyway according to the plan).

Dummett (8 points), Gerrard (11 points) and Carroll (4 points) returned a total of 23 points, but it cost me -8 to bring them in. So after deduction, 15 points.

Net loss: 26 minus 15 = 11 points.

Not as bad as first feared, but 11 points at that overall rank is an awful lot of positions to lose.

I then sought to find out the reason DGW31 had gone so wrong. Jordan Mutch (16 points) as my 3rd sub? Yeah, that was a factor. But I had never seriously considered him for my starting line-up as Cardiff only had the single game. But, rest assured I won't make THAT mistake again!*

No, in reality, the real reason my season started to collapse was down to one man. And you know who that is. The man who will not be able to keep his point scoring run going. Step forward Yaya Toure.

This is what punished me. Missing out on the 31 points he scored in DGW31 was the difference between increasing my rank from 1959th, to plummeting back out of the Top 5k.

But, no use crying over spilt milk, he wasn't part of the plan yet. The plan called for me to transfer him in for GW33. So, what did I do?

I panicked.

I ignored the plan, which would have had me save my FT, and instead transferred the now in-form David Silva OUT and bring Yaya IN. But in order to fund that I had to free up cash elsewhere. So OUT went the injured Koscielny, and in preparation for DGW34, IN came Palace defender Scott Dann. Who I benched for GW32.

And there we have it, a -4 points hit before a ball was kicked in GW32, which left me at a disadvantage in terms of improving my overall rank (6722nd) before I had even started.

But now I had Yaya. And all those lovely points he consistently brings in (for everyone except for me and Matej it appeared).

With baited breath I waited for him to do what it is he does and bang in 5 goals, make 3 more, get awarded 4 bonus points (he gets 1 extra for being Yaya) and then bask in the glory of being a Yaya owner.

1 point and a booking.

Excuse me?!?! 1 point! I was close to having a Walt-esque meltdown (@EplFanForLife). THIS WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN!!! To make matters worse, the transferred out Silva scored. And I'm not even going to go into what the until-very-recently-owned J-Rod and Lallana did to Newcastle. Bad times.

By Sunday evening, with just Monday's fixture to come, I was sat on 31 points (27 points actually, with the -4 hit) and my ranking had PLUMMETED from 6722nd to 13902nd! So much for getting back into the Top 5k, I was heading out of the Top 15k!

The Monday night fixture was Sunderland vs West Ham, which promised little - although I did have Vito Mannone, Adam Johnson and Andy Carroll to play. The team news came in, Johnson benched. Again. Second week in a row. Screw you Poyet! But wait, what was that? Jordan Mutch as my first sub? Sat on 10 points? Yes please!

*I never did learn that lesson about benching Mutch

Things then started to go my way. An Andy Carroll goal. Then an assist. Ok, it was preventing Mannone from picking up points, but Carroll scoring was waaay more important, being my risky differential.

Then Adam Johnson comes on. For a 1 point cameo (as I tweeted). No sooner had I sent the tweet he went and scored! And got a bonus point! 7 points! Woo-hoo!

And who would have thought that 12 point Andy Carroll would have scored higher than 9 point Luis Suarez if you'd captained him? I didn't, but that's not the point!

But, it was just damage limitation; 31 points became 52 (or 48 after the transfer deduction) and although I came soaring back up the overall rankings to finish 7920th, it was still a fall of 1198 places.

Having not encountered red arrows in consecutive GW's since GW2 and 3, I was in new territory here. So what did I do?

I HAVEN'T PANICKED!

Not yet anyway. No early transfers. No unnecessary points hits. I feel obliged to leave Andy Carroll in for one more week, against his old club Liverpool. He may have a score to settle there.

Planning for DGW34 is underway. Here is a sneak preview.

If I have learnt anything from the last two GW's, it is the following:

1. I have seriously missed out not having Yaya Toure
2. Cheap bench players are a necessity, but throwing them in once in a while may surprise you
3. A plan never survives first contact with the enemy (Helmuth von Moltke the Elder)
4. That said, it's important to have a plan
5. Always captain Suarez. Still holds firm, even when players like Hazard and Yaya score hat-tricks
6. No matter how tempting early on, try and hold on to that Wildcard for DGW's - just ask The Chief!
7. There is nothing wrong in "only" fielding 7 or 8 players in a DGW
8. DON'T PANIC!
