Dan's Digest DGW37

Welcome back to Dan’s Digest where we’ll take a brief look at a few thoughts before the DGW37 kicks off. The points raised here are designed to get you thinking about your moves for the last couple of weeks.

DGW Teams

Arsenal and Sunderland are obviously playing twice this week which presents plenty of opportunities for investment, especially so late in the season as you don’t need to plan too far ahead.

Arsenal

Arsenal’s unbeaten run came to an end against Swansea on Monday night as they fell to a 1-0 defeat but don’t let this put you off investing in them. They had 23 goal attempts , which is the joint highest with Man City who hit 6 against QPR, showing that they had no trouble creating opportunities. Despite not registering an assist in the last 6 gameweeks, Ozil has been the most creative Arsenal midfielder with 18 chances created (7 more than 2nd placed Cazorla) and I expect him to produce some fantasy returns in this DGW. In terms of goal threat Olivier Giroud has struggled recently. A few weeks ago it was accepted that most active teams would have Giroud in for the DGW but that is looking unlikely now since he hasn't scored in his last 4 games. He’s had 1 shot on target in that time and hasn't completed a full 90 minutes of Premier League action since 4th April. That has left Sanchez as the team’s main goal threat, which is of little surprise, and will be many people’s captain selection for this weekend.

Jack Wilshere has recently returned from (another) injury and played just over 20 minutes in each of the last 2 gameweeks. With two matches in quick succession he could end up starting one and his stats have been excellent since his return with 5 chances created in just 28 minutes of action against Swansea, as well as 2 goal attempts from inside the box.

Be aware when selecting Arsenal players that if automatic qualification for the Champions League is secured this gameweek then Wenger may choose to rest several key players in GW38 for the FA Cup final.

Sunderland

Sunderland successfully completed the ‘smash-n-grab’ tactic against Everton last weekend with a couple of lucky goals and a solid defensive display. A home game against Leicester followed by a trip to the Emirates sees the Black Cats come up against the league’s two in-form teams. In defensive terms we can’t expect Sunderland to keep a clean sheet this week despite their shut-out against Everton simply because of who they’re playing against. However, van Aanholt has been given license to get forward at any opportunity by Dick Advocaat and is a very good option for the DGW. With 8 attempts on goal in the last 6GWs and 4 of those being in the box, the left back carries a goal threat going forward. In addition to that, he’s created 10 goalscoring opportunities for his teammates showing he has potential to add to his 5 assists so far this season.

Going forward, Jordi Gomez is on penalties which always holds potential and also has an assist to his name in recent matches. It’s difficult to choose from the striking options available at Sunderland simply because they all lack the quality needed to be consistent at this level. Danny Graham’s re-introduction to the team though offers an interesting option as he’ll play as the furthest forward and most central figure in the 4-3-3 formation.

Hazard

Eden Hazard has picked up plenty of accolades this season and is the current top scorer in terms of FPL points this season. However, a lacklustre performance against Liverpool last weekend combined with just 1 goal and no assists in his last 4 games suggests Hazard may well be on his summer holidays already as far as FPL is concerned. With no shots mustered against Liverpool and a hefty price tag it might be time to ship him out to either redistribute funds elsewhere or bring in another Arsenal midfielder for the DGW.

Gerrard

Steven Gerrard’s final game in front of the Anfield faithful will be an emotional affair for all involved. Against a Crystal Palace side with nothing to play for and no points in 4 games Gerrard could go out with a bang. Expect the referee to give Liverpool the benefit of the doubt when it comes to challenges or handballs inside the box to give Gerrard the chance to score one last goal in front of the Kop.

An end of season trend?

Over the last three seasons we've seen 48 clean sheets during gameweeks 35-36 in the Premier League compared to just 30 during gameweeks 37-38. Similarly, 113 goals have been scored in gameweeks 35-36 in the past couple of seasons which has risen to 133 for the final two gameweeks. This is not a full-proof statistical analysis that stands up to scrutiny. However, it does suggest there may be a trend in the final few games of the Premier League for teams to open up and play more expansive football where goals are more regular and clean sheets are rarer. For this reason, and due to the unpredictable nature of the last few games, I’d suggest investing in the ‘Power 7’ frontline of midfielders and forwards rather than defenders since this is likely to be where the points are to be found over the coming couple of weeks.

GWs 35-36:        2013 = 55GC, 13CS

                               2012 = 58GC, 17CS
                               2011 = 72GC, 18CS (Bolton had 4 matches & 8 others had 3)

GWs 37-38:       2013 = 66GC, 13CS

                              2012 = 67GC, 7CS
                              2011 = 58GC, 10CS

Bantasy Football: Suggesting Sunderland (again)

I could be Captain Obvious and tell you to put in six Manchester players this week but you already know that and I like to think of my posts as somewhat useful - if largely farcical.

If Vladimir Putin on a stick isn't a farcicle, I don't know what is

Sunderland

Enter stage left Sunderland. They may look familiar to you from my post a few weeks ago but rest assured; much has changed since you didn't read that. They now have an excellent chance of staying up - not least because Fulham couldn't beat Hull and Norwich have lost their final two games (Chelsea and Arsenal) before even playing them.

Any game is winnable when you're in a relegation scrap. West Brom at home and even a
"Giggsified" United at Old Trafford are no exceptions.

Connor Wickham (4.6)

Have you ever had that thing where one minute you're a totally unknown Magikarp of a player whom your relegation-bound team have squandered £8million on and the next you're single-handedly dragging them from the depths of oblivion into a position where survival isn't just possible but probable? No? Well this bloke has. Now listen all about it.

Forget the five priceless goals Wicker chair's netted in his last three games; take a look at that bantasy points tally and you'll need to take a cold shower and conjure a mental image of Susan Boyle in a two-piece before you can leave the house without walking like a pterodactyl to cover your shame.

13, 8, 16. Only one bonus point went missing. Phwoar.

He costs - you guessed it - practically nothing. He's owned by - wait for it - absolutely no-one (0.8%). There's no excuse to not have this boy in your team if you currently have any single GW players apart from SAS, Lukaku and maybe Giroud. I'd even swap him for Adebayscore.

Wickam evolved into Gyarados. Sh*t subsequently got serious!

Fabio Borini (6.2)

If you like penalty takers and believe in the power of on-loan strikers to drastically over-perform like I do, Borini is your man. If, however, you also enjoy making as many fantasy points as possible for as few fantasy coins as possible, stick with Connor Wickerman. Don't try and be fancy. Borini is owned by the same number of people (0.8%) and I don't care what your Mum tells you - no-one's going to like you more for being different.

Being different: Not always beneficial

Adam Johnson (6.4)

Forget Russia - Adam Johnson is the real riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.   Between 11th January and 1st February he boshed in 51 points! In four games! It's now been five matches since he's done anything decent. Maybe there's still stardust tucked away somewhere in his boots. Maybe he accidentally shook it out along with astroturf sand. Either way he's one for the chancers amongst you. That said, at 6.4 he's the best in his price bracket given the DGW. I'd even take him over the supremely in-form Sterlings and Puncheons of this world* - THAT's how much I heart double gameweeks.

*Don't you just hate that phrase? - There's only one Jason Puncheon in this world

Jon O'Shea (4.8)

A mate of mine had a running joke with his uni mates that they would go out out every time O'Shea scored a goal. Suffice to say they all got 1sts and didn't meet many ladyfriends. Anyway point is - the boy don't score much. What he does do is play every game. He'll be playing against Swansea at home and he'll be playing at West Brom at home (let's forget about the Old Trafford game for a clean sheet shall we?). Both are must win and there's the faintest sliver of hope Sunderland could realise that keeping a clean sheet and scoring makes you three points.

FPL Hints - Gameweek 37

Transfers: Henderson & Michu OUT (-4 Hit) / Walcott & Santi Cazorla IN

*FPLH reserves the right to change this team at any time.
Any changes made will be confirmed on FPLH's Twitter account.

Here we are! GW 37 - The penultimate Gameweek of the season.  For the FPL addicts among us it means that we have to start making alternative plans to keep preoccupied for the summer.  Aside from that, It is incredible to think that the continuity of two of the PL's longest held management positions will soon come to an end.  Moyes' trophyless/hard graft 11 year reign with the Toffees is being rewarded with the hot seat at United, as trophy-laden Fergie finally retires.  Good luck to both of them - Let's hope it spices up FPL for next season!

Speaking of FPL, hasn't someone been on a galactic run of late! :D

Despite having a below par season, I finally found some form and topped it off by scoring a ton in last week's DGW courtesy of my wildcard.  My recent run has pushed me up in the rankings from 19k to 5k in the space of 3 Gameweeks!  With hindsight, last week's DGW could have been so much better if I picked Walker/Cahill/Adebayor/Ramires instead of Vertonghen/Luiz/Lukaku/Michu but oh well, I still scored a ton!

For this GW, I decided to only bring in players who still have something to play for + reasonable upcoming fixtures.  I decided to buy Walcott and Santi Cazorla (with a -4 hit) as I believe Arsenal will do everything in their might to pip arch-rivals Spurs in their pursuit of securing a CL spot.  This means playing their best players and going all-out to score goals.  Walcott has form on his side, but Santi hasn't.  But I think Santi is due a goal or two anytime soon and what better timing than now?  Moreover, this season, they have a combined tally of 25 PL goals / 22 PL assists between them, which is fantastic!

I am worried that Tevez and Zabaleta will be rested post-FA Cup final for their fixture v Reading.  In fact, Mata may even be rested pre-Europa League final!  Either way, even if I only have 10 out of 11 for this GW that should be fine.

I wish I had Everton coverage in the form of Baines/Fellaini but I feel that they aren't going to play for much now (despite Moyes' reign ending) after effectively securing 6th spot.  Even MUFC coverage would have been nice, but they may give the young guns a run in their final match which would be a waste of a transfer.  I also thought about buying Ben Arfa as a differential, but opted against the risk.

My captain for this week is Theo, vice-captain is Bale.
